1. Sustainable Development
Human beings depend on natural resources โ air, water, soil, minerals, forests โ for survival and progress. If we keep consuming these resources faster than nature can replace them, future generations will be left with a damaged planet. Sustainable development is the answer to this problem.
Definition (Brundtland Commission, 1987): Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainable development stands on three pillars, and true development is possible only when all three are balanced:

2. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also called the 2030 Agenda, which all member countries (including India) aim to achieve by the year 2030. Important goals include:
- Goal 1 โ No Poverty; Goal 2 โ Zero Hunger; Goal 3 โ Good Health and Well-being
- Goal 4 โ Quality Education; Goal 5 โ Gender Equality; Goal 6 โ Clean Water and Sanitation
- Goal 7 โ Affordable and Clean Energy; Goal 8 โ Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Goal 12 โ Responsible Consumption and Production; Goal 13 โ Climate Action
- Goal 14 โ Life Below Water; Goal 15 โ Life on Land; Goal 16 โ Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
3. Problems Related to Sustainable Development
The three major problems that sustainable development tries to solve are:
- Depletion of natural resources: fossil fuels (coal, petroleum), minerals and groundwater are being used up much faster than they can form. Forests are being cut for farming, roads and cities (deforestation), destroying wildlife habitats.
- Pollution: air pollution from vehicles and factories, water pollution from sewage and industrial waste, soil pollution from chemical fertilisers, pesticides and plastic, and noise pollution โ all damage health and ecosystems. Non-biodegradable waste such as plastic remains in the environment for hundreds of years.
- Global warming and climate change: greenhouse gases (mainly carbon dioxide) released by burning fossil fuels trap heat in the atmosphere. This melts glaciers, raises sea levels, and causes floods, droughts and extreme weather.
A growing population multiplies each of these problems, because more people need more food, water, energy, land and goods.
4. Our Role in Sustainable Development
Every citizen and every student can contribute through simple daily habits based on the 3 Rs:
- Reduce: use less โ switch off lights and fans when not needed, close taps tightly, walk or cycle for short distances, avoid single-use plastic.
- Reuse: use things again โ carry cloth bags, refill bottles, donate old clothes and books instead of throwing them.
- Recycle: convert waste into new products โ separate dry and wet waste, compost kitchen waste, send paper, glass and metal for recycling.
Other contributions include planting trees, harvesting rainwater, using energy-efficient appliances (such as LED bulbs), preferring solar energy, using public transport or carpooling, and spreading awareness in the community. Quality education itself supports sustainability, because educated citizens make responsible choices.
5. Green Economy and Green Growth
Green economy: an economy that aims at reducing environmental risks, using resources efficiently and improving human well-being and social equity โ i.e., growth that is low-carbon, resource-efficient and socially inclusive (UNEP definition).
In a green economy, income and employment grow through public and private investments that reduce pollution and carbon emissions instead of increasing them โ for example, investment in solar and wind power plants, electric vehicles, organic farming and waste-recycling industries.
6. Green Skills and Green Jobs
Green skills are the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a society that reduces the impact of human activity on the environment. Green jobs are jobs that use these skills to protect or restore the environment.

Green jobs are important because they protect the ecosystem, conserve energy and water, reduce waste and pollution, and at the same time provide decent employment โ connecting environmental protection with economic growth (SDG 8 and SDG 13 together).
Exam Tip: Learn the Brundtland definition of sustainable development word-for-word โ it is asked as a 1โ2 mark question almost every year. Also remember the numbers: 17 SDGs, adopted by the UN in 2015, target year 2030.
